If a person privides cutlery are you obliged to use it?
If you go to someone's place for a meal and they provide cutlery that you wouldn't normally use (say a knife and fork for food that is normally eaten with your fingers) is it rude not to use it? I know that you are not meant to ask for cutlery that you think is missing, unless it's an obvious oversight (a fork when you are eating steak, for example), but what about the opposite? What would you think?

If they provide cutlery for what you consider finger food, I'd use the cutlery. I'd accept the silverware as a kind of a hint.
Just watch the host, that is the best guide to what *they* consider polite.
