Computer Science - studying the basics?
I am interested in learning more about computer science - namely programming for web pages, and the basics/more advanced elements of it.
What would be the first step - I am wanting to pick things up myself and appreciate there is A LOT to take in.
Any suggestions on good textbooks for various disciplines within the computer science umbrella?
I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering so I have a grip on mathematical knowledge - I even know basic computing (C+, Pascal) but nothing on, say Java or any web code.
Please help!

Computer science is not web code your background seems geared more to computer science than web code
OK sorry - if you want to learn the basics of web code you need to get into markup (HTML/XHTML/XML/XSLT etc.) Javascript (Jquery frameworks etc. the much overhyped AJAX) Server side scripting (ASP.net or PHP) Databases (SQLServer or MySQL) and a little bit of graphics editing. There are more skills like Flash etc. choose wisely if you can.
I could go on and on but i would not recomend any books the net is your best friend and enjoy
