how do i fit upvc windows into a stone bay window please help I'm desperate ?
I have stone bay windows that have rotten wood frames and i would like to fit upvc double glazed units but i am not sure how to do this please can you help me
There are 2 ways to do it.
My favourite is to use fixing foam. You can get a foam gun for around a tenner from a UPVC supplier as well as the window made to your requirements.
The foam costs around £4 a tin and one will do at least a window. Budget on a tin of gun cleaner for each tin of foam, again at around £4 a time.
If you are having the windows specially made ask the firm you choose to come and measure up for you, even if you are going to fit them yourself. The reason I say this is that they will know about how much extra to allow to go behind the render etc.
Once the opening has been measured, chop the old window out then offer up the frame without the glass inside and square it up. Make sure it is supported all the way around.
Then wet the gap between the window and opening and spray the foam in. You need less than you think as it will expand to several times its initial volume.
This will set in a few hours but full strength will be met in 12 hours or so. Having said that the fitters usually go back a few hours later and fit the glass.
Fitting the glass is a technique in itself. The firm that supplies them to you will be able to advise. Essentially with UPVC some of the strength of the windows, especially the openers, relies on the correct fitting of the glass. This is not the case for timber windows.
Oh, and make sure you go for plenty of quotes and remember that no 2 firms will give you exactly the same product.
As a minimum you really want:
Alloy reinforced frames
Internal beading - better from a security angle
About 70mm frames
26mm thick glazed panels
FENSA Registered
Internal mechanisms for the window locks
5 point locking on the doors.
